Tapa

In praise of shadows and materials 2011

I chose a Samoan Tapa Cloth and created a collection of surface design and a Jacquard woven cloth.

The material quality of the Tapa cloth made of tree bark, the wastes from their daily lives and its process to create the best use of the material inspired me to work with my everyday paper trash. Just like Samoan people soaked the bark, beat it, and patch them, I took paper trash and wet, beat, tear, and patch together to create a collection of surface design. At the same time, I was referencing to the the way Japanese people built their traditional wooden houses to praise the shadows, create ways to let natural lights in beautifully with a resignation to their environment. This idea of adapting the existing environment or material and making the most of what they had seemed similar to the way Samoan people made the cloth.

For the jacquard woven fabric, I was responding more to the patterns and the color of the Tapa cloth. The cloth's bold liner patterns against different shade of browns again gave me a connection to the lights in traditional Japanese house.

This project gave me an opportunity to examine heritage of my aesthetics. It made me aware of my interests in Japanese aesthetics, the idea of up-cycling, and who I am as an artist and designer.
